2023 Annual Symposium
Call for abstract submissions
You are invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentation at the 2023 Society of Surgical Ergonomics Annual Symposium taking place virtually on September 8th, 2023. The abstracts and work presented all contribute to the quality and success of the Symposium!
Submission process

The deadline to submit is June 12th, 2023 at 11:59PM ET. Submissions received after this date will not be considered.

All submissions must be made in English using the online submission form. Further instructions are available below regarding the format of the abstract.

Authors may be submit more than one abstract.

Presenters are expected to present the virtually and register for the 2023 Annual Symposium. Presenters will be requested to fill out disclosure and conflict of interest forms upon acceptance for presentation.

Abstracts may have been previously presented at national or international meetings. However, abstracts previously published as peer-reviewed manuscripts will not be accepted.
Submission categories

The following types of submissions are welcome: original research, pilot and ongoing studies, case studies, and thematic literature reviews.

Topics of interest include physical and cognitive human factors/ergonomics topics relevant to surgery and surgical teams.
Abstract format
-
All abstracts must be submitted online using the online submission form.

Maximum word count is 300 words maximum (excluding the title).

Title word count is 25 words maximum.

No figures or tables are allowed.

The abstract must include the following sections: Title, Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions.

The abstract body should not contain any author or affiliation information to maintain a blinded review process. No identifying information such as names of authors and their affiliations, hospitals, medical schools, universities, or cities, etc may be listed in the title or text of the abstract.

List authors in the order of authorship. Do not include degrees, titles, institutional appointments, or addresses. Please note that correspondence will be sent to the submitter only.

Use standard abbreviations such as kg (kilogram), g (gram), mg (milligram), ml (millilitre), L (litre), mEq, m (metre), mmol (millimole), / (per), and % (percent). Place special or unusual abbreviations in parentheses after the full word the first time it appears.
Review and selection
-
Submissions will be blinded, reviewed, and selected by a review panel of experts in the field of surgical ergonomics.

Abstracts will be judged on relevance to surgical ergonomics, innovation, scientific merit, and the absence of commercial bias.

Starting July 14th 2023, the submitter (person who submitted the abstract and who provided their email in the submission form) will be notified by email of the status of the submission (accepted/rejected).

The highest ranked abstracts will be offered oral presentations and all other accepted abstracts will be offered poster presentations.
Participation in the SSE Annual Symposium

Please note that by making a submission, the presenting author must agree to participate as scheduled, to register for the symposium, and pay the registration fees (if applicable). Discounted registration rates are available for residents and students.

The presentation type, date and time will be provided to the submitter, in addition to details regarding oral or poster presentation format.
